History

Although the herb is native to Asia, it has become very popular, especially in southern Europe, as is evident from its name. It is called Greek hay because the ancient Greeks and Romans used it as fodder for cattle. However, it was observed that animals fed on fenugreek showed an increase in milk yield. On the recommendation of Hippocrates, the 'father of medicine', fenugreek was prescribed especially to women after childbirth because of its effects. It helped to increase lactation and to harmonise the post-natal state. It was also prescribed to women who suffered from painful menstruation. It was also popular with the ancient Egyptians, who added its seeds to their traditional dishes. The remaining leaves of this plant were part of the Egyptian Kuphi incense, whose holy smoke formed an essential part of fumigation and embalming rituals. Fenugreek seeds have also been found in the tomb of Tutankhamun himself. Origin and cultivation

Nowadays it is mainly cultivated in India and China. Fenugreek grows to a height of one metre and blooms with snow-white or soft yellow flowers. The fruit of this plant is a pod which contains edible seeds. Composition and properties
