Damar originally comes from the tropical forests of Southeast Asia, especially Sumatra. The //Shorea javanica// tree, from the //Dipterocarpaceae// family, can reach up to 40 meters and has been deliberately cultivated since the 19th century in repong damar—agroforestry gardens where it grows alongside crops like coffee and fruit trees.

Cultivating damar trees is regarded as a model of sustainable practice, blending biodiversity conservation, the livelihoods of local communities, and a long-standing tradition of resin use.

The clear or light yellow resin is obtained by cutting the bark and trees can produce it for decades. Traditionally, damar has been used not only as incense for prayers, rituals, and home cleansing, but also in arts and crafts, such as the final varnishing of paintings.
